The Evolution of Offices

The observation they received was that students would place themselves in a position where they could clearly see the surrounding environment, which sparked their interest. This observation is in line with the distracted characteristics observed by other designers in Steelcase elsewhere. We often view lack of concentration as a psychological function, and our thoughts are like running a train farther and farther. But some scientists believe that distraction first reflects human visual function. So Steelcase began to consider the evolution of distraction. McKenna said, "A person or animal tends to be visually disturbed in their field of vision, and we begin to consider distraction as a non derogatory state of study. It is an adjustment we make during evolution to better avoid predators
This visual alertness is great for avoiding predators on the African savannah, but this ability is not suitable for working in an office. Brody's goal is to help employees avoid this physiological adaptive behavior. The screen surrounding the main position can keep employees' gaze away from the surrounding activity interference. The chairs and computers are directly selected from Steelcase's existing product line, and both can flexibly adjust their positions for employees to adapt. Users can lean back like college students. In addition, there is a small convenience: there is a power outlet and hammock under the seat, and the user's bag can be placed close to the ground, but the distance is within reach.
Of course, Brody can only eliminate the interference of the physical world, and if there is anything distracting on the screen, there is no way. Another study conducted by Steelcase found that the average office employee's attention is interrupted every 11 minutes. Brody's functionality may be equivalent to placing a "Do Not Disturb" sign in front of you without interfering with your phone, flashing Gmail email tabs, or notifications on other phones. However, it can still make up for the shortcomings of an open office, allowing you to temporarily avoid colleagues who are walking around and talking/discussing cooperation between seats. The rest, Gmail, Instagram, and other things that interrupt your flow state still need to be overcome on your own.
